Ideal Gas Equation (PV = nRT = NkBT)
jee-mainjee-advancedneet-ug
PV = nRT = NkBT
What each symbol means
| Symbol | What it stands for |
|---|---|
| N | Total number of molecules |
| P | Pressure of gas (Pa) |
| R | Universal gas constant = 8.314 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹ |
| T | Absolute temperature (K) |
| V | Volume of gas (m³) |
| n | Number of moles (mol) |
| kB | Boltzmann constant = 1.38 × 10⁻²³ J K⁻¹ |
When to use this
Valid for ideal gases (low pressure, high temperature). Real gases deviate at high P and low T. Also P = ρRT/M₀ where ρ = mass density, M₀ = molar mass in kg/mol.
